Are 2020’s TikTok food trends worth it?

By Essie Ashton ‘21 and Zoë Waechter ‘21

Since the start of quarantine in 2020, the TikTok app has risen in popularity. There is a wide variety of content on the app including dancing videos, comedy sketches, and even cooking tutorials.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, eating at restaurants has become less accessible, and more creators have started sharing food related videos and tutorials. From three-step drinks to elaborate entrees, these food trends are a perfect way to spend your excess time and recreate your favorite restaurant dishes without having to leave the house.

Caroline Hyde is a Catlin Gabel School senior who is a frequent user on the app and has experimented with different recipes she has found.

“I made  homemade eggnog during the Christmas season and I attempted a lunch box cake,” said Hyde. “It went fairly well, and they were delicious. It's just really cool because you get to see the recipes from people you’d probably never meet in real life.”

We have decided to try out some of these trends for ourselves and report back on what we think. Hopefully this helps you gain some ideas about recipes you should (or shouldn’t) make yourself!
